Local/National News
  • As of May 11th, Canada’s case count stood at 284 cases with one associated death. BC and Ontario have had the most cases with 79 and 76 respectively.

  • On Saturday, May 9th, Provincial authorities announced that about 500 Canadian pigs in quarantine at their Alberta, Canada farm have been put down. The pigs at that farm had previously tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1).

International News

  • With the global outbreak of novel H1N1 influenza (swine flu) entering its fourth week, physicians at emergency rooms, clinics, and hospitals around the United States say they are overwhelmed with "worried well" who have as much as doubled their patient loads. For example Dr. Panacek, professor of emergency medicine at University of California-Davis Medical Center, has been seeing people with uncomplicated colds coming into the Davis Health System's ERs asking for flu tests, including entire families with minimal to no symptoms.   • A Chinese man returning from studying at a U.S. university has become the first suspected case of swine flu in mainland China, the country's Health Ministry said on Sunday. CBC
  • High schools, universities, dance halls, movie theaters and bars have reopened across Mexico. Primary schools will reopen this week. CIDRAP
